Summary: | Was the end there from the beginning? In this erudite and wide-ranging work, Andrei Orlov traces how ancient Jewish and Christian works posited connections between antagonist mythic themes of the past and the coming apocalyptic transformations of the future. Demons of Change explores ‘antagonistic patterns’, especially as relating to heroic ‘apotheosis’, in Second Temple Jewish and early Christian texts. Orlov’s work demonstrates how hostile relations between key figures in these ancient works contributed to the transformation of the protagonist, and how such patterns were ‘reiterated’ across several textual traditions. |
