| Summary: | Balaam son of Beor is a multidimensional character, whether we examine his activity in the Hebrew Bible, in post-biblical Judaism, or on the inscription preserved on plaster found at Tell Deir 'Aliā in Transjordan. Most studies of this enigmatic figure still tend, however, to constrict his multidimensionality within a narrow bipolar framework. Thus there is a need to reframe our view of him from perspectives other than the purely literary. From a comparative phenomenological perspective, Balaam appears to enact a number of diverse, complementary roles quite similar to those of other ancient Near Eastern magico-religious specialists. |
