Description
Summary:The article deals with the various short tunnels and rock-cuttings which are located between the spring of Gihon, the Middle Bronze II water system (Channel II, Tunnel III and "round chamber") and the bottom of Warren's Shaft. It seems that they were created in relation to the cutting of the Hezekiah's Tunnel (Tunnel VIII), in the late 8th century The article tries to outline the relative chronology of their cutting in the rock. Part of these works (Phases 1,2,3a) were preparatory operations to the cutting of Tunnel VIII. Preparatory work was essential so that the miners of Hezekiah's Tunnel could work without being threatened by the spring's water, and the ancient water work (Channel II) could be used continuously untill the new tunnel was completed. The later phase (3b) was made to improve the access to the water system after its completion, probably to facilitate its maintenance.
