Une tradition littéraire, depuis Tertullien, met ce prétendu martyre en parallèle avec ceux de Pierre et de Paul, une tradition liturgique tardive le place à Rome près de la Porte Latine. The martyrdom of St. John the Evangelist, by immersion in a bath of boiling oil at Rome, is probably a pious invention of the Roman Church to justify references in the Gospel to the martyrdom of the two brothers James and John. Literary tradition, since the time of Tertullian, puts this supposed martyrdom alongside those of Peter and Paul, and a belated liturgical tradition locates it in Rome, near the Latin Gate. |
