Summary: | When you read the work of scholars who make use of Josephus, readers are made aware, sometimes ad nuaseam, of Josephus' contradictions or self-serving interests. The use of Josephus is always qualified by indifference or scepticism. In this volume Mason offers us a collection of previously published work that, inter alia, provide new approaches to Josephus and his writings, while also bringing attention to how Josephus can be used (or not) as a source for historical reconstruction. The collection also questions existing analytical categories ("religion", "Judaism", "gospel") relevant to NT study in that they do not cohere with ancient conceptions of language, hence a revision is needed as suggested by the title. |
