Summary: | How the NT authors made use of the OT has become one of the storm centres of current Biblical studies. Scholars examine which textual traditions were followed by the NT authors, what "methods" if any the authors of the New Testament employed, how the use of the NT relates to the scriptural interpretation of Early Judaism and how a quotation or an allusion to the OT functions in its new context, to name but a few of the issues involved. The present volume had its origin in the 2003 H.H. Bingham Colloquium in NT at McMaster Divinity College in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. This colloquium focused upon "understanding the OT texts as mediated through the NT, and the NT texts as they interpreted the OT especially in relation to Jesus Christ" (vii). According to Porter, "The use of the OT in the NT raises a host of exegetical and practical questions - questions of allusion to illusion, from questions of ancient understanding to modern meaning" (8). The implications of this use "include how one views the relation between the Testaments, how one interprets the Bible today in light of how it has been interpreted in the past, and perhaps most importantly, how one views Jesus Christ in the light of scriptural witness and fulfilment" (1). |
