Summary: | The "Transfiguration story" in the gospel reading follows directly on from and completes Matthew's previous narrative (Matt 16:13-28), in which Peter declares Jesus as "the Messiah, Son of the living God", along with Jesus' response declaring what this truly means: he must go to Jerusalem, to his death and to being raised. Using almost exactly Peter's words, Caiaphas will later challenge Jesus, "Tell us if you are the Messiah"; and when Jesus responds, he calls for his death, the bystanders even mocking Jesus, "If you are the Messiah" (Matt 26:63-68). |
