Summary: | One of the earliest Christian concepts of eschatological reconciliation is found in Origen. According to Origen, the completion of history is only conceivable as a state in which God?s will for salvation has been universally realised. In this process, the voluntary orientation of creatures towards the divine reality plays a decisive role. The article reconstructs the eschatology of Origen from the two motifs of hope for all and of human freedom. Both motifs, however, are in quite a tense relationship to each other, as contemporary discourses on eschatology demonstrate vividly. They too place a lot of emphasis on the ideas of universal hope and human freedom, as the article shows with respect to some of their central constellations. The article aims to show that Origen?s point of view can deepen our understanding of current conflicts in debates on eschatology and that contemporary eschatology displays the lasting systematic relevance of Origen?s theology. |
