Summary: | In traditional Protestant theology and in modern, fundamentalist-oriented Protestantism, the double outcome of judgment is taught. Hell is the place here for the execution of the eternal punishments for sin. In the 18th century there was a tendency towards the universalism of God?s saving grace. K. Barth took this universalism to a new level by justifying it Christologically: the actual judgment takes place on the cross of Christ. But he does not claim an apocatastasis panton. Other authors such as E. Jüngel, W. Härle, G. Ebeling, W. Joest and W. Pannenberg think universalistically without representing the apocatastasis panton. There is the borderline case of eternal damnation, it consists in the complete annihilation of the sinner. An eternal hell is not necessary for this. Only J. Moltmann decisively propagates universal reconciliation. |
