Description
Summary:Hosea 5:8-10 describes a Judahite campaign north into Benjaminite territory. Traditionally, this campaign has been situated in the middle of the eighth century during the conflict commonly known as the Syro-Ephraimite War. This historical context is problematic for several reasons, not least of which is that there is no evidence whatsoever for Judahite aggression during this conflict. Rather, Judah is depicted as helpless in the face of the Israelite-Aramean alliance, merely hoping to survive. On the other hand, the final decades of the eighth century, during the reign of Hezekiah of Judah and after the fall of Samaria to the Assyrians, fit the circumstances described in Hos 5:8-10 remarkably well. This was a period during which both textual and archaeological evidence indicate that Judah expanded northward into Benjaminite territory. Hosea 5:8-10, then, would represent a fascinating glimpse into a Benjaminite view of Hezekiah’s northward expansion. It should come as no surprise that the Benjaminites were somewhat less positive about these developments than their Judahite counterparts were.
