Description
Summary:The recent theatrical turn in theology has produced fruitful conversations between drama as art form and theology aimed at present-life living, and now also for historical theological research aimed at enhancing current knowledge of religious practices of the first-century Christ movement. If the twenty-first-century critical spectator focuses on the sounds and not only on the silences that emanate from the distant stage, there are many interesting phenomena to view, such as the various spaces in which Christ-following communities practised their religious singing. The power of God-praise singing is widely recognised, as well as the ambiguities about the practice, because of the scarcity of evidence for the religious singing practices of the first-century Christ followers. One way in which some of the static can be tuned out, is to consider various spaces in which Christ followers performed their faith. Contemporary notions about theatrical spaces are useful to construct common relational structures to connect with the liturgical singing of the ancient Christian communities, because theatrical spaces shape and are shaped by various factors, in the same manner in which the Christ movement shaped and was shaped by its world.
