Summary: | This article starts with a complaint about the traditional literary models that focus almost solely on the writing stage of the Jesus tradition when explaining the same yet different gospel accounts (SDGA). To fill this gap, this article identifies diverse factors in the first two stages (the initial and transmission stages) of the Jesus tradition. Orality studies provide useful insights about diverse performance factors that may result in the SDGA such as direct contact with the audience, knowledge of the audience about the subject, responsiveness of the audience, the active role of the performer dealing with oral tradition, specific contexts where oral tradition is performed, and the nature of oral tradition. Memory studies also offer valuable insights about memory factors that may contribute to the SDGA such as fact vs. interpretation, past vs. present, individual memory vs. collective memory, as well as many subfactors. Having identified these various factors in different stages of the Jesus tradition, this article argues that a more sensitive approach to the Jesus tradition should consider these factors more seriously in reimagining the SDGA. |
