Se la pratica del prestito deve sempre scaturire dalla misericordia, il saggio di Gerusalemme mette tuttavia in guardia sia i creditori che i debitori: i primi dal pericolo di trasformare il prestito in un furto legale, i secondi da pratiche dilatatorie e menzognere. Riallacciandosi alla possibilità dell’esilio e, più in generale, alla brama di denaro che la pratica del prestito e della garanzia può generare, il Siracide loda infine la bellezza di una casa dove gli abitanti vivono in sobrietà e in armonia. | ||

While the practice of lending must always flow from mercy, the Jerusalem sage nevertheless warns both creditors and debtors: the former from the danger of turning the loan into legal theft, the latter from extortion and lying practices. Harkening back to the possibility of exile and, more generally, to the lust for money that the practice of lending and surety can generate, Ben Sira, in the end, praises the beauty of a home where the inhabitants live in simplicity and harmony. | ||
