Description
Summary:The present article sheds light on the motif of the purification of hearts expressed in Acts 15:9. It examines how this motif relates to Greco-Roman anthropology, especially to philosophical and medical concepts of that time. In doing so, it raises the following questions: Is the idea expressed in Acts 15:9 compatible with these concepts, and is there a further dimension the motif of the purification of hearts unfolds compared to these models? Thereby, the article explores the potential of Acts 15:9 in the dialogue with educated pagan readers.
In his speech at the assembly of the apostles in Jerusalem (Acts 15:6–21), Peter argues for accepting the non-Jewish Christ believers (the ἔθνη) as full members of God’s people. One of his statements (Acts 15,9) contains the terms καθαρίζω, καρδία and πίστις, resulting in an expression quite unusual for Luke. According to Peter, God has purified the hearts of the ἔθνη by faith.
