Description
Summary:In Cyprus, three fragments of a marble table were found, depicting the sacrifice of Isaac, Daniel in the lion’s den, and David with the sling. These bas-reliefs, dated to the early 5th century, are the oldest examples of Early Christian art in Cyprus. In the absence of other local documents, texts from Patristic literature and iconographic examples from the period are used to reconstruct the common cultural horizon to which Cyprus belonged. The theological, literary, and artistic production were deeply interconnected. This study illustrates how, in diverse geographical and cultural contexts, the same artistic and theological patterns are replicated to interpret Old Testament stories and present them in visual catechesis for the faithful.
