Description
Summary:Because of the different ways in which the inhabitants of Palestine disposed of their dead, the picture that can be gleaned from the burial practices of ancient Palestine is a multi-faceted one. There is not necessarily any logical or chronologial development in the mode of burial. It seems that the different societies in Palestine were reflected in the way they buried their dead: the importance attached to family ties is clear from the communal underground tombs consisting of different rooms intended for a large number of people - probably extended families. When the emphasis shifted to the individual, the burial practices reflect a development in the direction of single burials. This article does not intend to provide any theological interpretation but merely discusses several selected burial sites in Palestine, descriptionbing the burial practices that can be deduced from these sites.
