| Summary: | Special Edition: Understanding the Old Testament in South Africa. This paper begins with a brief historical review of the development of theological education in Africa and the progress made in this respect. Five levels of training are identified. This is followed by a perusal of the needs and challenges facing theological education. There is a need to theologise in the African context, though without isolating Africa from the rest of the Christian world, and taking its own ecclesiastical pluralism seriously. The context of today's Africa includes not only the traditional life and world-view and the rich religio-cultural background, but also more contemporary issues in the social, political and human spheres. A basic further need is to provide for a variety of requirements of the church with its ever more diversified forms of ministry and witness. The role and place of Reformed Theology in these respects is briefly mentioned. |
