Summary:Opinions in biblical scholarship on the question of the existence of oral epic poetry in Ancient Israel and an Israelite 'national epic' are discussed in the light of newer folklore theories on epic. Approaches to the question are proposed which are based on these new theories and on the comparison of the biblical texts to South Slavic oral epic poetry.
