Description
Summary:The poem on proper and improper shame in Sira 41:14-42:8 is analysed on a literary, social and ideological plane. The objective is to define the way in which this text was supposed to function as a persuasive vehicle of communication. The anthropological model of honour and shame as pivotal values in ancient Mediterranean societies is used as an interpretative key to the text. This same model is then funher used to argue that the purpose of this poem was, inter alia, to use the concept of shame to regulate social interaction, to enforce cultural values and norms, to control social deviation and to define group boundaries.
