Description
Summary:There is a gap between professional Biblical scholarship on the one hand, and the believing communities who read the Bible, on the other hand. The widespread perception among many lay Bible readers (if not the majority) is that Biblical scholarship has taken the Bible away from them by employing numerous critical tools in the interpretation process. A perception among many professional Biblical scholars, on the other hand, is that lay Bible readers cannot contribute to a profound discussion on the interpretation of the Bible. This reflects the situation in the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa. The present state of affairs can be characterised with reference to Bernstein's distinction between objectivism and relativism. Discourse (on the basis of a strategy of reading competence) is proposed as a means of bridging the gap between 'professional' exegetes and lay Bible readers.
