Summary:Ferdinand Deist, to whose memory this article is dedicated, had a deep interest in societal values. Such values are always situated specifically in a society and culture. Several factors play a role in changing values, inter alia changes in the natural environment. The study of changing values in an ancient society rests heavily on 'contextual archaeology where the human ecosystem emphasises the interrelatedness of variables in culture and environment. In the article the central highlands of Palestine form the geographical backdrop for a short review of society and societal values in ancient Israel.
