Riepilogo:A review of some interpretive models for the religious polemics in the book of Hosea can be an instructive reminder of the interplay between text and interpreter and the never-ending search for the contexts in antiquity from which a Biblical text emerges. Part I of this paper takes up the religious polemic against Baalism in the book of Hosea, concentrating on the history of interpretation as seen through the lenses of extra-Biblical texts and archaeological research. Two broad trends in the last century and a half of interpretation are suggested, and some attention is given also to recent contributions. By 'broad trend' is meant a sharing of presuppositions on the part of scholars, but not necessarily a consensus among them. Part II will provide some further analyses of the material under consideration.
