Description
Summary:Women often make references to the Old Testament while telling the stories of abuse against their bodies. They use these references in their search for a religious explanation of what is happening to them. Also, they are in search of guidance on how to react to abuse as women of faith. This article consists of two parts. In the first part descriptions of these references to the Old Testament in women's stories will be given. In the second part suggestions will be made as to how these references to the Old Testament can be 'relanguaged' to serve as support systems to the women involved. The languages of Brenner, Weems, Vorster and Foucault will be explored and their usefulness for 'relanguaging' the body discourses of (South) African women will be explained. However, eventually a choice will be made for the language of African women theologians themselves as a tool for 'relanguaging' the religious discourses which keep (South) African women entrapped in abuse and bodily despair.
