Description
Summary:Current Daniel research, and the road ahead In critical circles reasonable consensus has been reached concerning the issues that placed the Book of Daniel in the centre of attention for the past two centuries. The consensus consists of the following: that the Book of Daniel is pseudepigraphic, as part of a tradition that flourished in the period between the two Testaments; that the tales (Dn 1-6) originated in an older Eastern context while Daniel 2 consists of a tale combined with a vision; that the visions of Daniel 7-12 were written during the Maccabean persecution in the second century BCE by the same author who recontextualized the tales; and that the Book of Daniel is a witness of a group pacifist Jews using ex eventu prophecies to validate their own predictions. The article asks which issues determine the agenda of present day research and what is the future of this research. Issues touched upon are the text of the Book of Daniel as rendered in different traditions; the genres in the book; the different Sitze im Leben; the history of interpretation; and theology and ethics in the book.
