| Summary: | The article describes and discusses the use of certain Old Testament texts and motifs in the Malagasy Catholic Church's version of famadihana, that is a set of traditional death and burial rituals of the Merina and Betsileo ethnic groups of the central highland of Madagascar. The use of three Old Testament texts - Gen 49:29- 50:13 (the account of Jacob's death and burial), Exod 13:19 (the transfer of Joseph's bones from Egypt to Canaan), and Exod 20:12 (the Fourth commandment) - seem to have two functions. On the one hand it serves to legitimize typically pre-Christian rituals into the church, and on the other hand it serves to inculturate the Christian faith into Malagasy culture and society. |
