| Summary: | Tsāra'ath in the Hebrew Bible. Suggestions for a translation to end the stigma attached to Leprosy In this article attention is paid to the concept of Tsāra'ath and ways to translate the concept in order to stop the negative impact of the term "leprosy", which has previously often been used. This is a problem, particularly in communities where Hansen's disease (Leprosy) is prevalent. An alternative which is often used when the inaccuracy of "leprosy" as translation equivalent is taken into account, is "(serious) skin disease". This does also not suffice, because Tsāra'ath actually depicts a state of religious impurity. The solution offered here is a reader friendly transcription of Tsāra'ath, such as tsaraat (in Afrikaans) or zaraath (in English). |
