Description
Summary:Religion is - once again - under suspicion. Will religion in general and the subjects of Old Testament and Biblical Studies survive? Various salvage attempts are underway, amongst others the Intelligent Design movement. The latter attempt is flawed, however, and does not stand the test of a scientific theory, and also does not solve the problem. A better way to approach the problem of faith and the Biblical sciences in a modern world is to take account of the phases of faith, as described by Jordaan (2000), and spheres of relevance, as demarcated by Rossouw (1981). However, in order to evaluate the validity of these two perspectives, insights from the Cognitive Sciences are applied: Mithen and the development of the mind, Boyer and the cognitive architechture of belief, McCauley and the naturalness of religion and the unnaturalness of science, and Peterson and maps of meaning. A central text in the creationist debates, namely Genesis 1, is evaluated. It is argued that this text is not so much about creation of the physical world, as it is about the creation of meaning in times of loss. Understood in this way, the futile either-choose-the-Bible or choose-for-science impasse is overcome, and a more fruitful role for faith in general and the Biblical Sciences in particular is made possible.
