Description
Summary:The essays collected in this volume were first presented at a hermeneutics conference on the Psalms organized by the Lutheran World Federation in 2013. Most papers gave special reference to the works of Martin Luther, so it was appropriate that this conference was held in Eisenach, near Wartburg Castle. The Psalter held a prominent place in Luther's biblical studies. He presented his first lectures at the University of Wittenberg with reference to the Psalms (1512) and later observed in in his Preface to the Psalms (1528): "Many of the Fathers have loved and praised the book of Psalms above all other books of the Bible… It preserves, not the trivial and ordinary things said by the [saints], but their deepest and noblest utterances, those which they used when speaking in full earnest and all urgency to God" (p. 9; all references are to the book under review).
