Description
Summary:The position of Biblical Studies as a university subject is often questioned because of a basic misunderstanding of its academic status. Although it is a "dependent" discipline, as "applied theology" it has a functional identity of its own. It can take its rightful place in the university once it is accepted that working form a specific basic commitment need not impair the scientific credibility of the biblical scholar’s word. At the same time there should be a critical awareness of the methodological presuppositions and paradigms being employed. The article discusses at length the various conditions to be met by Biblical Studies in order to function as a formative science at university level.
