| Summary: | This paper aims at explaining apparently chaotic and highly heterogeneous uses and values of the Akkadian iparras as regular manifestations of two universal diachronic developments, i.e., the imperfective and modal paths. The author first presents indicative and modal functions of the gram, and next, two universal functional developments, i.e., the resultative and modal paths. After that, the writer demonstrates that temporal and aspectual values of the iparras may be explained as a regular manifestation of the imperfective path, while its modal functions can be similarly analyzed as realizations of the modal path. Finally, this article argues that in light of the universal properties of the reduplication, both diachronies may have originated as one displaying an example of a split diachrony. In consequence, the author rejects theories which define the iparras from the synchronic perspective proposing, instead, an alternative explanation based upon the panchronic view of the grammar. |
