Summary:An elucidation is given of selected lexical comments with regard to the Qur'anic verse al-Tawbah 9:24 in the exegetical contribution of al-Ṭabarī, al-Tha'labī, al-Wāḥidī, al-Baghawī, al-Zamakhsharī, Fakhr al-Dīn al- Razī, al-Qurṭubī, al-Baiḍawī, Ibn Kathīr and Abūu al-Su 'ūd. Attention is paid to the kind of information supplied, and possible motivations underlying lexical explanations. General tendencies are pointed out. Words or phrases that are focused upon are 'ashīratu-kum, iqtaraftumū-hā, tijārah, kasāda-hā, masākin and tardawna-hā.
