| Summary: | This article indicates that the concept of יראת יהוה is used in the book of Ruth as a practical functional illustration of this particular wisdom motif. The research is mainly concerned with four text units from the book of Ruth, namely Ruth 1:16-17, 2:12, 3:9 and 4:11-13. It is clear from these verses that Ruth professes יראת יהוה. Ruth's declaration is supported by her literally living out a lifestyle of תסר - a righteous lifestyle, which complies with the true requirements of the law of the Lord. Because of this she obtains harmony with the divine order of creation of God and the law of retribution is implemented in a positive way in her life - she receives the blessing of YHWH in the most important aspects of her life: she receives honour and a good and respected name in the community of Bethlehem; she becomes part of an esteemed family; because of her marriage to Boaz, in addition she is now under the care of a righteous and prosperous man; and lastly, but most importantly - she is blessed with a son and a lineage (that later would become of national importance). |
