Description
Summary:The daggerboard emerged as a short-lived but seemingly widespread shipbuilding technology throughout the Lower Great Lakes in the early years of the 19th century. The early history and importance of this shipbuilding technology to the developmental trajectory of Great Lakes shipbuilding has been largely forgotten. Unrepresented within the archaeological record until recently, the identification of six such vessels dating from the early 19th century provides our first opportunity to characterize this important shipbuilding technology and to begin contextualizing its role in the wider history of the Great Lakes’ shipbuilding tradition.
