Summary: | English translations are not only plentiful but are of great significance for Jewish and Christian worshippers as well as for the ‘general’ public, as Daley shows us throughout this volume. This is a ‘light’ revision of his doctoral dissertation, supervised by Emanuel Tov, which (appropriately) gave Daley a degree from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 2007. Mainly, the revisions concern the addenda A and B on pp. 435-47. There, Daley looks at the five main twenty-first-century English versions published up to 2014. My own calculation implies that previously Daley’s thesis concentrated on the Authorized Version (King James Version) of 1611 through to the evangelical New Living Translation of 1996, which means that he included 22 editions—according to p. 14 and p. 221 (for example), and not the 21 listed in the first paragraph of the conclusion (p. 428)! No general thematic index nor a (modern) authors index is included in the book. That is a pity. This is a pioneering volume not only for its methodology in chapter 2 but in its application too. The methodology has his ‘Three-Staged’ approach which is mainly employed when he wishes to specify which editions may lie behind his principal translations into English. |
